Epilepsy Drugs Flashcards
Sodium blockers include
- LAMOTRIGINE
2.PHENYTOIN
3.CARBAMAZEPINE
4.TOPIRAMATE
3.SODIUM VALPORATE
One antiepileptic drug with broad spectrum of activity
Sodium Valporate
Calcium channel blockers
- Gabapentin
- Ethosuximide
3.Topiramate - Sodium valporate
Antiepileptic that targets t-type calcium channel
Ethosuximide
Inhibitors of Glutaminergic activity
1.Topiramate
2. Perampenel
3.Felbamate
4. Rufinamide
Agents that enhance GABA activity
1.BARBITURATE
2.BENZODIAZEPINE
3.sodium Valporate
4.Topiramate
5.Vigabatran
6.Tiagaban
MOA of Benzodiazepines
Increases the frequency of opening of the GABA mediated Cl channels
MOA OF BARBITURATES
Increase the duration of opening of the GABA MEDITAED Cl channels
Antiepileptic that ehances K+ inhibition
Retigabine
MOA of Levetiracetam
Binds to the synaptic glycoprotein ligand 2A to enhance GABA activity
Additionally blocks Ca channels in brain 🧠
Agent of choice in Generalized seizure
- Sodium Valporate (preferred as it blocks majority of channels)
But due to SE ; - LAMOTRIGINE can be used
Alts used in Generalized onset
Carbamazepine
Topiramate
Phenobarb
Phenytoin
Drug of choice with focal onset
First line: Carbamazepine or Levetiracetam
Alt : LAMOTRIGINE, Phenytoin or Topiramate, Sodium Valporate,Phenobarb, Garbapentin, Lacosamide
Preferred drug for Absence seizures
Ethosuximide
Why is Ethosuximide the preferred drug for Absence seizure?
They inhibit t-type Ca channels
Apart from Ethosuximde in Absence seizures what can be used?
Valporate or LAMOTRIGINE
Preferred in Atonic seizure
TOPIRAMATE AND SODIUM VALPORATE
PREFERRED AGENTS IN MYOCLONIC
Clonazepam, Sodium Valporate, LAMOTRIGINE
What is the term for seizures during menstruation?
CATAMENIAL SEIZURES
What is the presentation of Catamenial seizures
Seizures 3days before, during or right after menstruation
What causes Catamenial Seizures?
An imbalance between Estrogen and Progesterone. ie high Estrogen or low Progesterone. ESTROGEN IS A PROCONVULSANT while PROGESTERONE IS AN ANTICONVULSANT.
Treatment for Catamenial seizures

Agents of choice for a pregnant woman with epilepsy
LAMOTRIGINE and Levetiracetam
In Eclampsia, agent used?
MgSO4
For refractory seizures in focal seizures
Lobectomy
Hemisphererectomy
In psychological seizures
SERTRALINE
In psychological seizures
SERTRALINE
