Epigenetics Flashcards
What do epigenetic factors do?
Regulate gene expression and alter these factors
What are some epigenetic factors?
DNA methylation
Justine modifications
Non-coding RNA variants
What is DNA methylation?
Where a methyl group is added to cytosine
What are the 4 most common Justine modifications?
Acetylation, methylation, phosphorylation and ubiquitylation
What are readers, writers and erasers?
Writers - introduce various chemical modifications on DNA and his tones
Readers - specialised domain containing proteins that identify and interpret those modifications
Erasers - dedicated group of enzymes that remove chemical tags
What are imprinted cells?
Where either the maternal or paternal allele is expressed, not both
What are some DNA modifiers?
Hydroxymethylation, methylation and formulation
What are some Histone modifiers?
Acetylation, methylation, phosphorylation, chromatin conformation, histone chaperone
