Epi 4 Lymph Flashcards
Lymph is a fluid that is created in the _______ ________ of tissues
interstitial spaces
What are the lymph vessels from small to big?
Lymph Capillaries—->Lymph Veins/Venules—->R. Lymph Duct & L. Thoracic Duct
Which duct receives 75% of the lymph? What do the lymphatic ducts drain into?
The left thoracic duct…both major lymph ducts drain into the subclavian veins!
What is the main function of a lymph node? What are two possibilities when a lymph node becomes swollen?
A filter!!!! An infection or metastatic cancer
What are the 7 regions where lymph nodes are most extensive?
1.Breast 2.Neck 3.Axilla 4.Abdomen 5.Thorax 6.Pelvis 7.Groin
What are the four reasons for edema related to the lymph??
1.Excess filtration (HIGH Hydrostatic P) 2.Decreased absorption (LOW Oncotic P) 3. Increased capillary permeability 4.Blocked lymphatics
Pt Senario: 52 yr old male, type II diabetic. What is the cause of edema when Pt kidney fxn declines and urine shows proteinuria?
Low [Protein] in blood=Decreased Oncotic P and therefore decreased absorption
Pt Senario: 56 yr old female with recent mastectomy has swelling in her right arm. What is the cause?
Problems draining the lymph with so many lymph vessels removed
Pt Senario: 66 yr old male Swelling in left leg. Traveling for past week in car. Cause of swelling?
Clot formed in vein=Increased hydrostatic pressure=increased swelling
Pt Senario: 24 yr old female w/ recent root canal develops intense swelling in gingiva and underneath tongue. Why?
Increased Capillary permeability
Pt Senario: 65 yr old female left ventricular failure=swelling where? A 72 yr old male with Right ventricular failure=swelling where?
Left ventricular failure=swelling in the lungs….Right ventricular failure= swelling in the abdomen and lower extremities
Pt. senario: 32 yr old female pregnant has edema in both her lower extremities could extend to varicose veins..
Edema caused by fetus coming in contact with the inferior vena cava and causing a venous return back up.
Pt senario: 64 yr old female with rheumatoid arthritis presents with intense swelling of the wrists, hands, and fingers bilaterally.
tissue injury=increased capillary permeability
Pt senario: 58 yr old with alcohol abuse develops ascites (swelling of the abdominal cavity). Liver fxn decline with cirrhosis.
Decrease in proteins made by the liver=decrease in oncotic pressure=decrease in lymph absorption
Pt senario: 49 yr old female with varicose veins develops swelling in both calves.
Increased hydrostatic pressure
