EOC Flashcards
solid
particles are tightly packed, vibrating about a fixed position, have a definite shape, and definite volume.
liquid
particles are tightly packed but are far enough apart to slide over one another, has an indefinite shape and definite volume
gas
particles are very far apart and move freely, have an indefinite shape, and indefinite volume
plasma
ionized gas, had indefinite shape, indefinite volume, and is a very good conductor of electricity and is affected by magnetic fields
physical change
a change in appearance, without changing the identity of the material. It can be reversible and irreversible.
chemical change
occur when a substance reacts and forms one or more new substances (change in color or odor, bubbling, formation of a precipitate)
physical property
a property that can be easily observed without changing the identity of the substance (density, hardness, color, boiling and melting point)
chemical property
any ability to produce a change in the identity of matter
malleability
a substance that has the ability to be hammered into a thin sheet
Ductile
the ability of a substance to be hammered thin or drawn out into a wire
density
a measure of how close together its particles are. Low=float. High=sink
Chromatography
a process where a chemical mixture is separated into its components based on their different properties (charge, polarity, solubility)
Evaporation
the change of state from s liquid to a gas
Energy
break bonds in reactants
temperature
a measure of how hot (or cold) something is; specifically , a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object.
