enzymes (Inhibitors) Flashcards
Functions
Regulate metabolic processes Medicinal drugs Metabolic poisons
Types
Non-reversible inhibitors Reversible inhibitors: Competitive Non-competitive
Non-reversible
They bond covalently with enzymes to block or change the shape of the active site. This example: Medicinal drug: Aspirin Metabolic poison: Cyanide
Reversible inhibitors: Competitive
They compete with the substrate to bind with the active site of an enzyme, by doing this they block the enzyme’s active site so it is unable to do its function
Example:
Statin: Inhibits enzymes used in synthesis of cholsterol.
Reversible inhibitors: Non-competative
The inhibtor binds to the allosteric site of the enzyme, this causes the active site of the enzyme to change shape, causing it to become non complementary. As of thsi the substrate can no longer bid to te active site so the enzymes function can no longer be carried out.
