Enzymes Flashcards
Define Enzyme
Biological catalysts
Structure of Enzyme
Globular proteins that contain long chains of amino acids which are folded into a specific shape
Describe the lock and key model
Each enzyme has an active site where a certain substrate with a complementary shape fits into.
Describe the induced fit hypothesis
The active site of an enzyme actually changes shape slightly as the substrate enters
Why does the enzyme speed up the reaction? According to the induced fit hypothesis
The initial interaction is weak but causes the enzyme to bind to the substrate more. This puts strain on the substrate and lowers the activation energy of the reaction.
Define intracellular enzymes
Enzymes that act within the cell and produce polymers and from monomers
Define extra cellular enzymes
Enzymes that are sent out by a cell to break down large nutrient molecules in a process called digestion
Define catabolic
When an enzyme breaks down a substrate
Define anabolic
When an enzyme builds up a molecule
