Enzymes Flashcards
What is a catalyst?
A substance which increases the speed of a reaction, without being changed or used up in the reaction
3 functions of proteins in living cells
Amylase
Protease
Lipase
What does amylase do?
Converts starch into sugars
Where is amylase found?
Salivary gland
Pancreas
Small intestine
What does protease do?
Converts proteins into amino acids
Where is protease found?
Stomach
Pancreas
Small intestine
What does lipase do?
Converts lipids into glycerol and fatty acids
Where is lipase found?
Pancreas
Small intestine
What happens during an enzyme-catalysed reaction, if the temperature becomes to high?
The bonds holding the enzyme together break
Destroying enzymes special shape
Enzyme is denatured
Where in the body is bile produced?
The liver
Where is bile stored?
Gall bladder
Where is bile used?
Small intestine
2 reasons why the stomach produces hydrochloric acid
Kill bacteria Right pH (pH 2) for protease to work
2 enzymes that would work as biological powders
Protease
Lipase
4 advantages of enzymes in the industry
Specific - only catalyse reaction that you want them to
Low temps- low cost + saves energy
Continually use them
Biodegradable - less pollution
