Enzymes Flashcards
Active Site
A region on an enzyme that binds to a protein or other substance during a reaction.
Enzyme
A substance produced by a living organism which acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction.
Denatured
The enzyme is a protein, and at high temperatures, the shape of the protein is altered, preventing it from performing its function. It has been denatured.
Amylase
Catalyses the breakdown of starch into sugars in the mouth and small intestine.
Protease
Catalyses the breakdown of proteins into amino acids in the stomach and small intestine.
Lipase
Catalyses the breakdown of fats and oils into fatty acids and glycerol in the small intestine.
Amino Acids
A simple organic compound containing both a carboxyl (—COOH) and an amino (—NH2) group.
Salivary Gland
We call the major salivary glands the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands. They all secrete saliva into your mouth
Pancreas
A large gland behind the stomach which secretes digestive enzymes into the duodenum.
Small Intestines
The small intestine consists of three parts. The first part, called the duodenum, connects to the stomach.
Bile
A bitter greenish-brown alkaline fluid which aids digestion and is secreted by the liver and stored in the gall bladder.
Stomach
The internal organ in which the major part of the digestion of food occurs
Oesophagus
The part of the alimentary canal which connects the throat to the stomach. In humans and other vertebrates it is a muscular tube lined with mucous membrane.
