Cell Biology Flashcards
What are cells??
Cells are the basic building blocks of all living things.
Nucleus
Controls the cell
Cytoplasm
Where reactions take place
Chloroplast
Photosynthesis for a plant cell
Ribosomes
Produces Protein
Mitochondria
Where respiration takes place
Cell membrane
What goes in and out of a cell
Cell wall
Protects and supports the cell
Vacuole
Store’s cell sap to support the cell
Mitosis
A type of cell division that results in two daughter cells each having the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent nucleus, typical of ordinary tissue growth.
Chromosomes
Contains DNA
Fertilisation
When the sperm cell goes in the egg cell
Adaptations
Special features of a cell which makes them specialize the things they do
Sperm cell
Reproduction cell of a MAN
Egg cell
Reproduction cell of a WOMAN
Bacteria
Contains no nucleus and only contains cell wall, membrane and cytoplasm
Prokaryotic
A prokaryote is a single-celled organism that lacks a membrane-bound nucleus
Eukaryotic
A Eukaryotic is any organism whose cells contain a nucleus and other organelles enclosed within membranes
Binary Fission
It is the most common form of reproduction in prokaryotic and occurs in some single-celled Eukaryotas. This is when cells split into 2 to identical cells.
Active Transport
Active transport is the movement of molecules across a cell membrane from a region of their lower concentration to a region of their higher concentration
Osmosis
A process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one
Diffusion
Diffusion is the movement of a substance from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration
Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, some bacteria and some use the energy from sunlight to produce glucose from carbon dioxide and water. This glucose can be converted into private which releases adenine phosphate (ATP) by cellular respiration. Oxygen is also formed.
