Enzymes Flashcards
What are enzymes
Catalysts produced by living things
What’s a catalyst
Substance that speeds up a reaction without being changed or used up in the reaction
What are enzymes made of?
They are proteins made of chains of amino acids
what is special about enzymes?
they have special shapes so they can catalsye reactions
what 2 factors do enzymes need to work?
temp and ph
what does changing the temp do?
increase the rate of reaction
if it gets too hot what happens?
bonds that hold the enzyme together break which changes the special shape so it doesnt work and is denatured
what temp does enzymes in the human body work at?
37 degrees
what is the optimum ph of an enzyme?
neutral ph 7
what do digestive enzymes do?
break down big molecules into smaller
examples of big molecules?
starch proteins and fats
examples of smaller molecues
sugars amino acids and fatty acids
3 types of digestive enzyme
protease lipase and amylase
amylase function
convert starch into sugars
where is amylase made?
salivary glands pancreas and small intestine
