Enzymes Flashcards
What do enzymes do?
They break down large insoluble food molecules into smaller soluble food molecules.
What to enzymes act as? What does it do?
They act as a biological catalyst.
They speed up chemical reactions.
What are enzymes?
They are large protein molecules and they have a groove on their surface called the active site.
What is the active site?
It is the place where the substrate attaches to.
What happens if the substrate fits perfectly into the active site?
The enzyme then breaks down the substrate into the products.
What are proteins broken down by?
Proteases
Where are protease found?
In the stomach, pancreas and the small intestine.
What are proteins?
Proteins are long chains of chemicals called amino acids?
What is starch (carbohydrates) broken down by?
Amylase
What is starch made of?
Starch consists of a chain of glucose molecules.
Where is amylase found?
In the saliva and pancreatic fluid
What are lipids made of?
glycerol and fatty acids
What are lipids broken down by?
Lipase
Where are lipase found?
In the pancreatic fluid and the small intestine.
Where is bile made?
the liver
