Enzymes Flashcards
What is the definition of enzymes?
An enzyme is a protein that acts as a biological catalyst to speed up chemical reactions
What is the monomer of carbohydrates?
Glucose
What is the monomer of proteins?
Amino acids
What is the monomer for lipids?
Glycerol and fatty acids
Why doesn’t an enzyme work after it’s denatured?
When an enzyme is denatures it’s because the active site is deformed. This can happen because of the temperature being too high/low or the pH being too low/high.
What is the optimum temperature/pH?
An optimum temperature is a temperature at which a catalyst is most effective.
Why does an enzyme denature when the temperature is too high?
Because there is too much kinetic energy and the particles rush into the active site, breaking it
