enzymes Flashcards
what do enzymes act as?
catalysts
where do reactions occur on an enzyme
reactions happen on the active site
what is an enzymes active site complementary to
an enzymes active site is complementary to the substrate they break down (molecule)
why are active sites important
active site is where reaction occurs with a lower activation energy
why can enzymes be described as stereospecific
they break down a single enantiomer and will have no effect on the other optical isomer
what 2 factors can cause enzymes to denature
- temperature
- pH
explain how enzyme inhibition works
the drugs bind to the active site of an enzyme by having a similar shape to the substrate
this prevents the substrate binding to the active site
