Enzymes Flashcards
free energy
available/ useful energy
1st law of thermodynamics
energy is not created/ destroyed but is transferred/transformed
exergonic reaction (PS or CR)
energy released/ spontaneous ; CR
endergonic reaction (PS or CR)
energy required/ nonspontaneous; PS
more free energy =
less stable
why is ATP useful
bonds of the negatively charged phosphate groups are unstable and easily hydrolyzed
what do enzymes lower
activation rate
temp on enzymes
temp increase causes reaction rate to increase because molecules are bouncing around more and are it is more likely that a substrate will bind with the active site. But at some point it is too hot and high temp denatures (3D shape breaks)
when the point of saturation for substrate conc is reached what is the effect of adding more substrate? what about more enzymes?
more substrate will not change reaction rate; more enzymes will increase reaction rate
competitive inhibitor
competes with substrate (binds to active site, substrate can’t bind)
noncompetitive inhibitor
doesn’t bind to the active site but its binding changes the shape of the active site and substrate can’t bind
