Enzyme Reactions - Inhibitors Flashcards
1
Q
What are competitive inhibitors?
A
competitive inhibitors have a similar shape to the substrate so they can bind to the active site
this stops the substrate forming an E-S complex
the proportion of substrate to competitive inhibitor will affect how much the rate of reaction changes - e.g. the more inhibitor the less substrate or less inhibitor more substrate
2
Q
What is a non-competitive inhibitor?
A
non-competitive inhibitor binds to the enzyme but not at the active site
changes the shape of the active site
no more E-S complexes are formed
changing the concentration of substrate wont make any difference
