Enzyme Properties Flashcards
What to enzyme properties relate to ?
Their tertiary structure.
How are enzymes so specific ?
Only catalyse one reaction .
Eg of how enzymes only catalyse one reaction .
Maltase only breaks down maltose.
Sucrase only breaks down sucrose.
One complementary substrate will fit into active site.
What is the active site shape determined by?
The enzymes tertiary structure ( which is determined by enzymes primary structure)
Each different enzyme has …
Different tertiary structure and different shaped active site.
What happens if substrate doesn’t fit active site?
No enzyme substrate complex formed and no reaction catalysed.
What happens if the tertiary structure of protein is altered in any way?
Shape of active shit changes.
Substrate won’t fit into active site.
Enzyme substrate complex not formed and enzyme not long carry out function.
What can alter tertiary structure?
pH
Temp
What is the primary structure of a protein determined by?
A gene.
If a mutation occurs that gene could change tertiary structure of enzyme.
