5. Inorganic Ions Flashcards
Define ion
An atom that has an electric charge
Positive charge ion.
Cation negative charge ion anion
Example of positive ion
Na+ sodium ion +1 charge
Ca2+ calcium ions +2 charge
Examples of negotiate charge ions
Cl- chlorine -1 charge
PO43 phosphate ion -3 charge
What is an inorganic ion ?
Ion which doesn’t contain carbon
Where can inorganic ions be found ?
In solution in cytoplasm of cells.
Body fluids of organisms.
What determines an ions role ?
It’s properties.
What is haemgloboin?
Large protein carrying oxygen around body
Structure of haemohlobin?
4 different polypeptide chains each with iron ion in centre.
In haemogloin what component binds with oxygen ?
The iron ion
How does the iron ion change when oxygen binds to it?
It changes from Fe2+ and then when it binds it goes to Fe3+.
Until oxygen is released
How is pH calculated ?
Based on concentration of hydrogen ions in environment .
The more hydrogen ions…
Lower pH
Acidic
What other type of reactions are affected by pH?
Enzyme controlled
What molecules do sodium ions help?
Glucose and amino acids cross cell membrane.
Co transport.
