Enzyme Flashcards
What happens when a enzymes substrate complex is formed?
Its lowers the activation energy.
Name 4 enzyme properties?
Denaturing.
Active site.
Specific.
Tertiary structure.
What does the induced fit model suggest?
It explains why enzymes are so specific and only bond to one substrate.
The substrate has to fit into the active site but have room to slightly change shape.
What is the term used to describe an enzyme that acts outside the cell?
Extracelluar.
What determines the shape of an anzyme’s active site?
The tertiary shape of the enzyme.
Why will an enzyme only bind with one substrate?
It can only bind with a substrate if it has a complementary shape to the active site.
What are competitive inhibitors?
They have a similar shape to the substrate.
Compete with substrate to bind with active site.
This prevents reaction taking place.
What are non-competitive inhibitors?
Bind to another point of the enzyme. NOT the active site.
Causes active site to change shape so substrate can no longer bind.
Increasing substrate concentration will not make a difference since they aren’t competing.
Many proteins are…
Enzymes.
What does each enzyme do?
Lowers the activation energy of the reaction it catalyses.
