environmental science Flashcards
It is a field that deals with the study of the interaction between human systems (population of the earth) and natural systems (earth itself and life)
Environmental Science
it is an academic field that takes physical, biological, and chemical sciences to study the environment and discover solutions to environmental problems
Environmental Science
Sciences used in environmental science include?
Geography, zoology, physics, ecology, oceanology, and geology
What are the Components of Environmental Science?
- Atmospheric Sciences
- Environmental Chemistry
- Forestry and Agriculture
- Geosciences
- Oceanography and Marine Sciences
This is an umbrella term for a cluster of distinct fields that are concerned with the Earth’s atmosphere, including CLIMATOLOGY, METEOROLOGY, and ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY AND PHYSICS.
Atmospheric Sciences
What are the layers of the Atmosphere?
- Troposphere
- Stratosphere
- Mesosphere
- Thermosphere
- Exosphere
It is a layer of the Atmosphere that is closest to the Earth’s surface, extending about 8-15 km (5-9 miles)
Troposphere
This is where all the WEATHER OCCURS and it contains about 75% of the atmosphere’s mass and most of it’s WATER VAPOR
Troposphere
It is the layer of the Atmosphere that is above the troposphere, extending from about 15 km to 50 km (9-31 miles)
Stratosphere
It contains the OZONE LAYER, which absorbs harmful UV radiation from the sun. In this layer, the temperature INCREASES with altitude due to the absorption of UV rays
Stratosphere
It is the layer of the atmosphere that is above the stratosphere, extending from about 50 km to 85 km (31-53 miles)
Mesosphere
The COLDEST LAYER, with the temperature dropping as low as -90⁰ C (-130⁰ F). This is where most METEORS burn up upon entering the Earth’s atmosphere
Mesosphere
it is the layer of the atmosphere that is above the mesosphere, extending from about 85 km to 600 km
Thermosphere
It is the outer most layer of the atmosphere, extending from 600 km (3.73 miles) up to 10,000 km (6,200 miles)
Exosphere
layer of the atmosphere that is thin and contains very few particles, gradually fading into space. SATELLITES orbit in this layer, and where you can see the stars
Exosphere
