Environmental Problems Flashcards
What happens when fossil fuels are burnt?
Carbon Dioxide and water vapour are always released into the atmosphere
Hydrocarbon + oxygen –> carbon dioxide + water vapour
What type of impurities are also found in petrol and diesel?
Sulfur impurities. So Sulfur Dioxide is also put into the air.
What happens if there’s not enough oxygen for the fuel to burn properly?
Particles of soot and Carbon Monoxide are also released
What does Sulfur Dioxide cause?
Acid Rain
How does Sulfur Dioxide fall as acid rain?
The acidic gasses (containing Sulfur dioxide) are released into the atmosphere, the Sulfur dissolves in the rain water to form acid rain
What are the consequences of acid rain?
- Causes lakes to become acidic, many plants and animals die as a result.
- Kills trees
- Damages limestone buildings
- Ruins stone statues
What do the benefits of electricity and travel have to be balanced against?
Environmental impacts.
What has been put into place to reduce emissions of air pollutants such as Sulfur dioxide and why?
International agreements have been put into place because governments have recognised the importance of balancing the benefits of electricity and travel against environmental impacts.
Can Sulfur be removed from fuels before they’re burnt?
Yes, but it costs more
Does it take less or more energy to remove Sulfur from fuels?
More energy. You have to burn more fuel, which thus releases more CO2
How is acid rain prevented in Power Stations?
Power stations now have Acid Gas Scrubbers to take harmful gases out before they release their fumes into the atmosphere.
How is acid rain prevented in cars?
Most cars are now fitted with catalytic converters to clean up their exhaust gases.
What is a simple way for reducing acid rain?
Reduce our use of fossil fuels
Who are the major culprits in burning fossil fuels?
Power stations, to make electricity
Cars
