Burning Fuels Flashcards
What happens when there’s plenty of oxygen about?
Hydrocarbons burn to produce only carbon dioxide and water
Hydrocarbon + oxygen –> carbon dioxide + water (+energy)
What has happened to the hydrogen and carbon in the hydrocarbon in this reaction?
Hydrocarbon + oxygen –> carbon dioxide + water (+energy)
Have both been oxidised
What does complete combustion release?
Lots of energy and only produces those two harmless waste products.
When there’s plenty of oxygen, what colour flame does the gas burn with?
A clear blue flame
How do you test for CO2?
Bubbling gas through limewater. It turns limewater milky
If there isn’t enough oxygen, what will happen?
The combustion will be incomplete
Is incomplete combustion safe?
NO!
What is produced by incomplete combustion?
Carbon dioxide and water are still produced, but you can also get carbon monoxide and carbon
What sort of flame does incomplete combustion mean?
A smoky yellow flame
Does incomplete combustion produce more or less energy than complete combustion?
Less energy
What is carbon monoxide like?
Colourless, odourless and very toxic gas
How are people killed every year due to incomplete combustion?
Every year people are killed while they sleep
When does complete combustion happen?
When there’s plenty of oxygen
State equation for complete combustion
Hydrocarbon + Oxygen –> Carbon Dioxide + Water
State equation for incomplete combustion
Hydrocarbon + Oxygen –> Carbon + Carbon Monoxide + Carbon Dioxide + Water
