Environmental Chemistry Flashcards
Fuel - what is it
A flammable substance that can be burnt to produce heat or energy
What is combustion
Means to burn something
What are the 3 things in the fire triangle
Fuel- oxygen-heat or energy
What’s the word equation for combustion
Fuel+oxygen~}CO2+water+energy
Acid rain
Why are cans coated in tin
It’s to prevent chemical reactions taking place as tin is less reactive than hydrogen
Which metals are affected by acid rain
Metals more reactive than hydrogen
Is all rain acidic
Yes from carbon dioxide in the air
Acid rain weathers which rocks
Carbon rocks only
How is acid rain made
Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are mixed within clouds and they then form into dilute sulphuric acid + nitric acid. The clouds then rain acid rain
Plants and pH
What can you add to change the pH
Plants are very fussy, they need the right pH in their soil. If too acidic you can add lime as it is a base and if the soil is too alkaline, you can add an acidic substance such as sulphur.
Another example of a useful reaction is indigestion tablets.
Indigestion is caused by what
Too much hydrochloric acid in your stomach
How can you remove the hydrochloric acid
By neutralising the acid from a base, for instance, magnesium oxide. You can consume this through indigestion tablets.
Global warming
Greenhouse effect
Explain ?
Gases get trapped and is stored in a layer around the earth. It slowly damages the earth but also keeps it warm.
What is it made by
Fossil fuels
Animals
Respiration
Deforestation
What can we do go prevent it
Be more energy efficient
- turn lights off
- solar panels
