Environmental Change Part 7 Flashcards
What is geosequestration an example of?
A management response to climate change
What is an environmental factor which is a key driver of climate change globally?
An increase of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere
What is a social factor which is a key driver of climate change globally?
Carbon monoxide emissions from motor vehicles in society
What are some environmental impacts of climate change?
Rainfall pattern changes, sea levels rising, ice melting and natural disasters becoming more frequent
How does climate change affect the ecosystem services in a negative manner?
Regulating services will be decreased as it becomes much more difficult to regulate food, water and temperature
How are ecosystem services negatively affected by climate change in the Arctic region of the Saami people in Scandinavia?
As temperatures increased due to climate change, sow melts, which means that Saami people cannot migrate successfully and may bring an end to their nomadic lifestyle
How has an increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere due to human activities affected the planet?
It has increased the levels of these gases to a point where they are influencing global climate
What does the blanket layer of greenhouse gases do?
Traps solar radiation and warms the planet
What are the four main greenhouse gases?
Carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and fluorinated gases
Where is carbon monoxide produced from?
Motor vehicle emissions
Where is carbon dioxide produced from?
Burning fossil fuels, aeroplane travel, burning of forests
Where is methane produced from?
Large-scale farming of livestock
Where is nitrous oxide produced from?
The use of fertilisers
Where are fluorinated gases produced from?
Propellants, coolants, refrigerators and solvents
As climate change alters the ecosystem, what happens to plants and animals?
They change their basic biology, change timing of certain events such as flowering, or move towards the poles and into higher altitudes where temperatures are similar to their previous habitats
