Evaluate the sustainability of management strategies applied to environmental change
When applying TBL, what is the response evaluated on?
Whether it is to substitute, eliminate, restore or compensate
What are the 3 criteria used to evaluate sustainability?
The social, economic and environmental outcomes of the management response
What are the 3 shortened words representing these 3 criteria?
Social factors = People
Environmental factors = Planet
Economic factors = Profit
What do social factors relate to?
There must be fair and equal outcomes for all people and communities in the region affect, with nobody losing out
What do environmental factors refer to?
Sustainable environment practices, which endeavour to benefit the natural order as much as possible, and do not harm the environment
What do economic factors refer to?
Whether the economic value created by the response is great enough to justify its implementation, and whether anybody loses out economically
What are some examples of key social criteria in a TBL evaluation?
Whether the response has the potential to alleviate negative impacts, address the societal drivers and whether people living nearby will have a higher or lower risk
What are some examples of key environmental criteria in a TBL evaluation?
Whether the response can help restore chemical or physical variables, and whether it addresses the change in ecosystem services
What are some examples of key economic criteria in a TBL evaluation
Whether it is a wise use of the economy and whether people will want to pay for things at a different price due to the response
What is sustainable development?
Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
What is environmental sustainability?
To ensure we do not cause damage to our environment or deplete resources we cannot renew
What are some examples of human activities which have led to negative environmental sustainability?
Industrialisation, deforestation and overexploitation of natural resources
