Entry Task #2 Flashcards
Describe the layers of the sun’s atmosphere starting with the closest to the sun’s interior:
Photosphere: inner layer, gives off visible light, when we take a picture of the sun this is what you see
Chromosphere: middle layer, reddish glow around the photosphere seen at the start and end of a total solar eclipse
Corona: outer layer, it looks like a white halo around the sun during a total solar eclipse. Extends for millions of km into space. Thins into streams of electrically charged particles called solar wind
How could sunspots impact life on Earth?
Sunspots themselves do not impact life on earth, however, they are associated with massive amounts of energy being released into space. These create magnetic storms that could affect radio communication, could impact power plants on earth and satellite technology.
Where and how is the sun’s energy produced?
The core produces the sun’s energy through nuclear fusion which joins hydrogen atoms to for helium atoms
