Q

Climb in slow flight

A

1) Take note of power setting then increase power. Don’t hesitate to use full power

2) Pitch up slightly to maintain constant speed. Be careful not to pitch too aggressively

3) Re-trim aircraft for the climb

Descent in slow flight

A

1) Take note of power setting then reduce power (few hundred rpm) control adverse yaw

2) Pitch down slightly to maintain airspeed

3) Re-trim aircraft for descent.

Q

Turns in slow flight

A

1) Perform a good lookout

2) Roll airplane to desired angle of bank, adjust pitch to maintain airspeed and altitude. Apply rudder for coordination

3) Add power if plane is sinking (usually not for gentle turns)

4) Keep a look out

Q

Level off from turns in slow flight

A

When approaching heading or landmark, roll wings back to level,
Adjust power back to slow flight setting.
Anticipate longer roll out (lead point a bit more than usual)

Q

Slow flight entry procedure

A

After HASEL check
1) Reduce power to 1500 rpm (control yaw). Allow plane to slow down but hold altitude by gradually pitching up as speed decreases. (Slow down don’t go down)

2) Once speed decreases below T/O Vfe extend T/O flaps (causes ballooning so lower nose as needed to maintain altitude). Trim as you go

3) Extend Ldg flaps when below Ldg flap Vfe.
Maintain altitude by adjusting attitude. Flaps create drag and craft will slow quicker. Pitch up to maintain altitude
Counteract left yaw with right rudder.

4) For practice, stay 5kts higher than stall speed. Once at that point, stop pitching up to avoid stall

Add power to help maintain altitude. 2000 rpm to start but adjust as needed.
Re-trim the plane.
Add enough rudder to remain coordinated.

Q

Recovery from slow flight

A

PAT

1) power: Apply full power and correct adverse yaw

2) Attitude: Push forward on the stick and lower nose to cruise attitude. Fine tune as needed for level flight. Retract flaps one stage at a time as speed increases

3) Trim: once aircraft has accelerated to normal airspeed reduce power to normal cruise setting and trim for cruise flight. Stay coordinated with rudder
