Definition Flashcards
What is slow flight?
Range of speeds between best endurance and stall speed
Unique aspect of slow flight
Power required increases as speed decreases. As it slows more power is needed to keep it level
Unexpected handling characteristics
Pitch up results in altitude loss and pitch down results in altitude gain
(Area of reverse command)
Why does this odd response happen
Not enough air moving over wings quick enough to create required lift.
Wing is not performing effectively to keep plane in flight.
What happens when you pitch up during slow flight?
Reduced airspeed, more drag, loss of altitude
What happens when you pitch down during slow flight
Increase airspeed, reduce drag, increase wing effectiveness. Increase altitude. If continued, will return to endurance flight
When and where can slow flight occur
During T/O & Ldg, especially immediately after liftoff and during a flare.
Other hazardous scenarios.
Clearing obstacle with too high nose up attitude and too low airspeed. Results in sinking.
Pitching up too much during flare. Results in sinking more than desired.
