Entropy Flashcards
why do larger or more complex compounds have higher molar entropies?
because there are more atoms and therefore more ways in which the particles can be arranged leading it to be more disordered / more ways for quanta of energy to be arranged.
why do gases have a greater molar entropy then solids?
Because the molecules are less ordered than those in a solid.
what causes the difference between theoretical and experimental values of lattice energy?
theoretical assumes 100% ionic character but polarisation of anions introduces a degree of covalent character.
why are hydration enthalpies exothermic?
Because the ions form new ION-DIPOLE interactions with polar water molecules, releasing energy.
