Enteric pathogens Flashcards
What are the three common enteric infection
Gastroenteritis
Diarrhoea
Dysentery
What are the features of gastroenteitis
N+V
Diarrhoea
Abdo pain
What are the features of diarrhoea
Raised frequency and loose stools
Caused by water and electrolyte loss
What chart is used to diagnose diarrhoea
Bristol Stool chart
5 to 7
What is dysentery
Inflammatory bloody diarrhoea
What 4 organisms cause enteritis
Bacteria
Virus
Protozoa
Helminths
How can enteritis be diagnosed
Microscopy (eggs and larvae)
Antigens (Toxin and virus)
PCR (Virus, bacteria and Protozoa Giardae)
Stool culture (bacteria w/ macConkey and XLD)
What are the features of MacConkey
Initial = pink
Result = red (Lactose fermenting)
= yellow (Non lactose fermenting)
What are the features of XLD
Differentiates Salmonella and Shigella
Salmonella = red with black spots
Shigella = Red
What two diseases can salmonella cause
Diarrhoea (Undercooked protein) Typhoid fever (Waterborne) give Cipofloxain
What structure can be damaged due to Typhoid
Gall bladder
Why are antibiotics not needed to treat diarrhoea
It is self limiting
What can cause dysentery
Shigella
What toxin can shigella produce
Shiga toxin
If a patient becomes unwell after a bbq/restaurant, what is the most likely diagnosis
Camplyobacter causing gastroenteritis
- Gram negative rods on Microscopy
- Growth on CCDA
