ENT - Hearing Loss and Disorders of the Ear Flashcards
What are the common ear symptoms?
What are the boundaries of the external, middle and inner ears?
External: outside of the ear to the tympanic membrane.
Middle: tympanic membrane to the lateral wall of the inner ear.
Inner: between the middle ear and internal acoustic meatus.
What are the two main physiological functions of the ear?
Hearing
Balance
What are the types of hearing loss?
What are the tests that are used to differentiate between types?
Sensorineural
Conductive
Rinnes - Tuning fork in front of the ear and then placed on skull behind ear. From which placement can the sound be heard loudest?
Webers - Tuning fork placed on forehead, does it lateralise to either ear?
What type of hearing loss?
Rinnes:
- LEFT = AC>BC
- RIGHT = AC>BC
Webers:
- Lateralises bilaterally
Normal Hearing
What type of hearing loss?
Rinnes:
- LEFT = AC>BC
- RIGHT = BC>AC
Webers:
- Lateralises to the right ear.
Right conductive hearing loss.
What type of hearing loss?
Rinnes:
- LEFT = AC>BC
- RIGHT = AC>BC
Webers:
- Lateralises to the left ear.
Right sensorineural hearing loss.
What type of hearing loss?
Rinnes:
- LEFT = BC>AC
- RIGHT = AC>BC
Webers:
- Lateralises to the left ear.
Left conductive hearing loss.
What type of hearing loss?
Rinnes:
- LEFT = AC>BC
- RIGHT = AC>BC
Webers:
- Lateralises to the right ear.
Left sensorineural hearing loss.
What is the function of the Eustachian tube?
The primary function is to equalize air pressure between the atmosphere and the middle ear.
What is the relevance of the eustachian tube in middle ear disease?
Long-term blockage of the Eustachian tube leads to the accumulation of fluid in the middle ear space that further increases pressure and hearing loss.
Predisposing the ear to infection.
