Rhinophyma

- Place vibrating tuning fork (512 Hz) on top of pts head, sound should be heard in both ears equally. Unilateral conduction loss lateralizes to the impaired ear (you can hear more in bad ear.
- Unilateral sensorineural loss lateralizes to the good ear
rinne test
Place tip of vibrating tuning fork on mastoid bone, ask pt if they can hear it, tell them to tell you when the sound stops, them move tuning fork to opening of ear canal. If they can still hear it AC> BC
What are you looking for on a nasal speculum exam?
septal deviation, septal perforation, inflammation, polyps, drainage
mucopurulent
containing mucus and pus
viral rhinitis
mucosa typically red and swollen with purulent drainage
allergic rhinitis
mucosa pale, bluish or red, turbinates boggy and drainage is clear
What cranial nerves are you testing when you ask pt to say “ahh” or check gag reflex
IX, X
If cranial nerve X is paralyzed soft palate wont rise on affected side. Uvula deviates to the opposite side of the nerve lesion
Torus palatinus and torus mandibularis
rounded, bony growths that vary in size and lobulation, common, benign, harmless
thrush

How can you check cranial nerve XI on neck exam?
check lateral neck rotation against resistance, shoulder shrug against resistance
Anterior triangle
formed by the border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, mandible and midline of neck
Contents: hyoid bone, cricoid bone, cartilage, trachea and anterior cervical lymph nodes
posterior triangle
formed by sternocleidomastoid muscle, trapezius and clavicle
contents: posterior cervical lymph nodes
cervical lymph nodes
occipital, post-auricular, pre-auricular, tonsillar, submaxillary, submental, anterior cervical, posterior cervical, supraclavicular
