What is a simile
A simile is another name for a comparison, when you compare objects you might say ‘Ella is tall, But Alexis is small’
What is a metaphor?
A metaphor is a comparison between 2 thing, For example: Lawson is a clown, Jim is a speeding bullet.
What is personification?
Personification is where you attribute human characteristics to objects.
What is Onomatopoeia?
Onomatopoeia is the term used for words and noises that sound the same, words that name the sound.
What is Alliteration?
Alliteration is a term used to describe the repetition of the same sound in a line, stanza or sometimes a poem. For example; she sells sea shells on the sea shore.
What is a ballad?
A ballad is a poetic form that tells a story. Ballads are similar to folk tales, they reflect the culture, music and heritage of a particular place.
What are Haikus?
Haikus are one of the most famous types of the non-rhyming poems. This type of poems come from Japan and is characterised by the structure of the lines. Most haiku poems focus on the natural world. The modern day haiku is written with a pattern of 3 lines of 5,7,5 syllables
What is Shape Poetry?
Shape poetry is an interesting way of putting your ideas about an object or emotion into the shape of the object you are writing about.
What are sonnets?
The sonnet is a form of lyric poetry. The word has its origins in Italy and comes from the Italian world ‘Sonetto’ which means ‘little song’. The most famous sonnets are from William Shakespeare. These consists of 14 lines, 10 syllables in each.
What are lyrics in English
Ballads are not the only form of Poetry that are written to be sung. Song Lyrics are a more popular form in which people engage with poetic forms. Many songs lyrics use devices of poetry such as similes, metaphors, personification and alliteration.
