Use of body mechanics:

  1. Maintain a wide base of support and lower the center of gravity. (use of a cane can widen the base support and increase stability)
  2. Bring the center of gravity of the care worker and that of the recipient close together. (You can provide care with a smaller amount of force if you are closer to the patient)
  3. Use bigger muscles such as thighs. ( You can provide nursing care easily by using your bigger muscles)
  4. Tuck the user’s arms and legs closer to the center of his/her body. (This will make the base of support smaller)
  5. Pull the user toward you rather push him/her (pulling causes less friction)
  6. Move you center of gravity as horizontally as possible (it’s easier to move thing if you use whole body)
  7. Do not twist your body. Set your toes to the direction towards which you are pushing the item. (a bigger burden will be on your lower back if you twist your body)
  8. Use the principle of leverage (create a fulcrum and you can turn a small amount of force into a big one.
