Q

The Union buries its dead 1st paragraph: Fake identity Of Unionism and how alcohol is the binding drink that kills their sorrows and is bushmans collective identity that binds them together

A

“Union Man accounted for his funeral” and “Unionism is stronger than creed, Liquor is stronger than Unionism” It is referenced many times in the story that Unionism is what binds the men together and that they all went to the funeral because he was a union man. (INSERT QUOTE) But it is seen through (INSERT QUOTE) that this collective identity is fake and their union bonds are not as strong as it first seems as many of the men became too drunk to attend the funeral. It is ironic that even one of the only forms of identity that the men give each other is quickly dismissed as they are raging alcoholics. This motif of Alcohol demonstrates the prevalence that it has on the collective identity of being a Bushman in Outback Australia. It is used to justify the lack of attendees at the funeral as all the bushman went in and out of the bars whilst the service was occurring. They tell themselves that unionism binds them together but (INSERT QUOTE 2). Even whilst at the funeral, bushman are intoxicated to numb the pains of being living in Outback Australia, as they can cannot keep their hats off out of respect.

Q

The Drovers wife 2nd Paragraph: The collective identity of living in Outback Australia. This is done through repetition and the motif of survival.

A

“Fought a bush fire” “Fought a flood” “Fought pneumonia” “fought a mad bullock” and “She made a bed on the kitchen table for the children” It is referenced many times in The Drovers wife, the repetition of the amount of times the wife has fought something in her life. This motif of survival is extremely prevalent as it’s an example of the collective identity of the living in Outback Australia and the struggles that is faced whilst doing so. The drover’s wife has (INSERT FOUGHT QUOTES) which proves not only that she is a fighter physically, but also a fighter mentally as she has not given up on her husband, or the children. The motif of surivial through the collective identity of living in Outback Australia is also shown through imagery with the table in the house. Powerful imagery is utilised when the mother puts her children on top of the rough table (INSERT 2ND QUOTE). A table symbolises a place where you survive through eating food, but when living in Outback Australia, it takes on a whole new meaning of surviving from all elements, not only starvation. The table symbolises the difference in living in metro locations and living living in Outback Australia.

Flames and Dangling Wire 1st Paragraph: Explores the issue of self discovery through commercialism and the destructive nature of humanity on nature, making it a living hell.

A

“We turn off down a gravel road” “It’s a rubbish dump, always burning” “Tons of rotten Newspapers” Gray explores the issue of self discovery through the journey motif as a voyage of self as the poem explores our destruction of nature through our continued efforts of commercialism. We start this journey by (INSERT QUOTE 1) and it is clear through symbolic imagery of the world (Its a rubbish dump, always burning) that Gray symbolises the rubbish dump as hell, and that our commercialistic attitude on life and destruction of nature has caused this. Through the (INSERT QUOTE 3) we understand that us humans have caused this destruction through commercialsim. Gray wants us to discover ourselves and our idealogical values on the theme of commercalsim and reflect on if we want to continue with the destruction of our world and the environment, in order to comply with the thirst for wealth.

Q

Harbour Dusk: Explores the issue of self discovery also through commercialsim and the destruction is has on nature and the beauty of the world.

A

“Against a far shore of dark crumbling bush” “a sky of mulberry and orange chiffon” “some melancholy” Gray expresses his sadness for the destruction of nature and the loss of beauty in this world through the theme of commercialism as the poem explores the issue of self discovery. Our protagonist in stanza 2 expresses through the metaphor (INSERT QUOTE 1) his sadness for the loss and destruction of the original harbour foreshore. It is now plagued with commercialised buildings, with the only goal to make profits which rids the harbour of its previous beauty. The sunset in the end symbolises the loss of day and loss of beauty, but also the loss of personal happiness for the world that the protagonist lives in “a sky of mulberry and orange chiffon” this feeling of depression is highlighted through the lexical choice of “some melancholy” which emphasises the impact of the loss of nature and its beauty. The theme of commercialism is apparent and prompts the issue of self discovery, and reflecting on self ideology and if we want to destroy the beauty of nature in order to rake in profits.

Q

Description of a walk: Explores the issue of self discovery through the glorification of nature.

A

“sandstone, great gouts of lava, petrified as iron…” “The Broken icebergs edge” “ploughed land… the Road a fracture” Gray expresses his love for nature through the Description of a walk as he explores the issue of self discovery through the theme of the glorification of nature. He does this through symbolism and juxtaposition of the (INSERT QUOTE 1 and 2). (QUOTE 1) suggests a passing of time of the natural world and nature, and the properties of natural world with iron being a hard substance. It symbolises a sense of permanence and physical strength “petrified” that potrays the timeless quality and beauty of mother nature and the north coast forest landscape. (QUOTE 2) is a metaphor if the beautiful natural imagery. The accumulation of ancient landscapes “iceberg” “petrified” “lava” exemplifies that gray uses the extreme states of science as the earth was forming with the heat imagery juxtaposed to the cold to show the magnificence of his environment. He shows how beautiful and extravagant the natural environment is. (Insert quote 3) symbolises the intrustion of man through the destructive imagery of plouged land and road a fracture. Gray attempts to show the reader through the juxtaposition of poems such as Flames and Dangling wire and Description of a walk, the sheer beauty of nature and the natural world. He wants us to discover ourselves and our morals and idealogical values and question if our materialistic commercialism is worth it, for all the destruction we have cause the environment. By exemplifying the beauty of the environment, Gray hopes to convince us to change our focuses from commercialism to naturism.
