ENGLISH TRIALS MONKAW PAPER 1 Flashcards
What is Jackies Main emotion that i have to talk about
Fear that is based off of Social Standards and stereotypes. This fear is created into anger, sadness and confusion.
Jackie Quotes: (HIS GOAL WITH BILLY IS PARALLEL TO SANDRA, HE WANTS HIM TO SUCCEED IN LIFE AND DO WELL AT WHAT HE DOES)
Anger: “Im Bustin my ass for those 50 pences” and then bans Billy From doing ballet out of fear, which is conveyed through anger
Sadness: Billy States “Mother would let me” in relation to Billy being able to do ballet which makes Jackie feel he has failed as a parent as Billy doesn’t support his decisions.
Confusion: “Lads do football.. or boxing.. or wrestling. Not friggin Ballet” Jackie says this and is confused to why Billy want’s to do this. He fears of being a bad parent and conforms to social standards and stereotypes as he believes that it is the right thing to do.
What is Sandra Wilkinsons Main emotion i have to talk about
Determination that is supported through the love and generosity that she has for Billy, but does not let him off easy as she is strict in making sure he succeeds. This determination sprouts from her unfulfilled marriage and her inability to become her dream job of a dancer.
Sandra Quotes (SHE IS A FOIL TO JACKIE)
Compassion/Generosity: “She Must’ve been a very special woman, your mother” (THIS USES A CLOSE SHOT OF BILLY AND SANDRA AS IT IS A MOMENT THAT SPARKS EMOTION IN THE VIEWER) This was Sandra attempting to get closer with Billy as she generally cares for him and is determined for him to succeed. When he says this she attempts to become a mother role for him.
Determination: “I’ve been thinking of the royal ballet school.. not me, you!” (THIS USES A MEDIUM SHOT WITH CLOSE UPS PREVELANT WHEN SHE TALKS) (THIS IS TO EMPHASISE THAT SHE IS SERIOUS AND BELIEVES HE SHOULD DO IT) Sandra attempts to introduce the idea of going to the ballet school to Billy. She suggests it at the start as it would sound weird to Billy but she became determined for him to at least audition at the school.
Strict: “What have I told you about that arm?” Sandra says this when teaching Billy a ballet move. Sandra is determined for Billy to become a dancer and reach his dreams. She sees herself in Billy and is determined to see him Succeed. Even if this means to be strict on billy as she never coddles him and is a tough critic, pushing him to be the best dancer he can be.
What is Billy’s main emotion i have to talk about?
Billy and his struggle with Adversity due to his love for Ballet, which is sterotyped as a girl hobby. This is expressed through determination, fear and Frustration
Billy Quotes
Frustration: “Just because I like ballet don’t mean I’m a poof, you know” (LONG SHOT TO SHOW HOW ALONE HE IS WITH MICHEAL) (HE FEELS ALONE WHILST HE DEALS WITH THIS ADVERSITY) This quote describes Billy’s struggle with adversity as he has to deal with the stereotypes of men can only do ballet if they are gay as Ballet is a girls hobby. Billy is well aware of this stereotype and is frustrated as he has to remind people like Jackie and his brother that his love for Ballet isn’t symbolic of his sexuality.
Fear: “I think I’m scared Dad” ( CLOSE UP SHOT TO EMPHASISE HIS SAD AND CARING MOMENT WITH HIS FATEHR) Billy was scared about going to ballet school. He is very passionate about dance but the life of adversity that Billy has, where he is beraded about how he can’t do ballet since he is a boy has made him afraid of the success of his ballet career.
Determination: “I don’t want a childhood, I want to be a ballet dancer.” (THIS USES A LIGHT HUE IN THE HALL TO SHOW HOPE WITH A MEDIUM SHOT OF BILLY) Billy says this to Sandra as he trusts her to help him when she can. Sandra does not follow suite to the stereotypes of men doing ballet and attempts to help with billy’s struggle with adversity as she attempts to help him get into the ballet school by teaching him ballet and convincing jackie to let him go.
