what is a sonnet?
a sonnet is a 14-line poem that uses rhyme and structure, and it follows the abab-cdcd-efef-gg pattern.
what is Imagery?
the imagery is to describe feelings, thoughts and experiences through words vividly.
Shakespeare was fairly good at using imagery in most of his plays, to create powerful pictures for the audience.
for example, in Macbeth, he uses blood imagery to amplify the guilt of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.
what is an aside?
this is a remark to the audience from a character, and the other actors do not hear it. this is usually an unspoken thought and or comment for the action.
what is an antithesis?
an antithesis is a literary dive that uses juxtaposition of two opposite ideas for contrast. this could change the tension, view, and complexities within the play and the characters.
what is anaphora?
anaphora is a deliberate repetition of words and or sequences of words at the start of a line and or phrase for effect. this emphasizes ideas and makes words more memorable. The rhythm of anaphora is also can signal the speaker’s determination for their point to be heard.
what is symbolism?
Symbolism uses symbols to help represent ideas or qualities beyond their literal meanings. For example, a heart can symbolize love, while a dove can symbolize peace. this can require the audience to connect the literal object with the communicated meanings. Shakespeare frequently employed symbolism to convey deeper ideas, elevating beyond the description.
what is a soliloquy?
A soliloquy is a speech by a character only addressed to the audience. this creates a shared private moment between the character and the audience. Soliloquies often reveal the character’s true feelings, intentions, or thoughts not shared with other characters.
