English society 1603 Flashcards
Where did James 1 rule previously
He was an established and successful king in scotland
What was the situation like when James came to the throne
Population had doubles from 1500 to 1650 to about 5 million. However agriculture and industry were not able to increase at the same rate leading to a country full of inflation, unemployment and a large sub-class.
How did the Political system work
Heavily dependant on Monarchs, increasingly however parliament was coming to play an indispensable role and one that would increase in significance as monarch’s wealth diminished
What was the role of the court in the political system
The court was the centre of power and the hub of the political system, although it was not a specific place. it revolved around the King and the great officers of state who attended him. The King was expected to listen to the advice of his Privy councillors, although he was not bound to act on it.
What were the importance of Patronage in the political system
Important as Patrons who had many clients would be a mark of their power. Also lead to the creation of factions.
Why was parliament and their role so significant
Parliament was the meeting place for representatives in the localities. Here, policies were explained and approval was sought. English parliament was polite, however outspoken when necessary. This was significant as it misled James to believe parliament would pass his laws unconditionally. However, parliament spent most of its time dealing with local grievances and passing local laws.
Elizabeths financial legacy
Elizabeth had failed to exploit the crown lands, despite managing her finances remarkably successfully she failed to make the most of the Crowns lands etc.
Elizabeths religious legacy
The number of catholics had dwindled, threats surrounding Mary Queen of Scots and an Elizabeth assassination coupled with war with Spain had created an anti-Catholic sentiment within the country.
