title
-Consider the title and make a prediction about what the poem is about.
-after reading poem, Examine the title again, this time interpreting for meaning.
Paraphrase
Translate the poem line by line into your own words on a literal level. Look for complete thoughts and look up unfamiliar words.
Connotations
Examine the poem for meaning beyond the literal. Look for figurative/literary devices, imagery, sound elements, etc.
Attitude/ Tone
the speakers mood towards the subject. Notice the speaker’s tone and attitude.
Shifts
Note any shifts or changes in speaker or attitude. Look for keywords relating to time change, punctuation, etc.
Theme
Briefly state in your own words what the poem is about (subject), then what the poet is saying about the subject (theme). Theme is NOT a one or two word idea.
allusion
An indirect reference to a well known religious, historical, or fictional person, event, or place
Metaphor
Comparison not using like or as
Simile
Comparison using like or as
Personification
Giving human qualities or traits to an inanimate object
Alliteration
Repetition of consonant sounds (she sells sea shells)
imagery
visually descriptive language

pattern of rhyme of the words at the end of each line in a poem
