English (Literary Elements) Flashcards
Theme
The main idea of a novel; what the author is trying to communicate. This is always stated as a sentence.
Symbol
An object, person, situation, or an action that has literal meaning but also stands for something else.
Tone
The author’s attittude toward the topic he or she is writing about.it is expressed through Diction (word choice) and details that the author selects.
Motif
A literary technique that uses a repeated element in a story. it could be a recurring image, symbol, sound, situation, or word/phrase.
Point of View (POV)
The perspective from which the story is told. Often pronouns are used to determine which perspective it is told from.
What are the 3 types of Point of View and what pronouns are used?
FIRST person which uses the pronouns I, My, We.
SECOND person which uses the pronouns You.
THIRD person which uses the pronouns They, He, She ( or names of characters)
