Figurative language
A figure of speech. Not literal. Eg. Metaphors or similes
Imperative language
Direct instruction
Alliteration
Repetition of a consonant. Can be repeated anywhere in a word. Helps set the mood/tone.
Assonance
Repetition of a vowel
Rhetorical question
A question without an expected answer. Used to promote thought.
Simile
Direct comparison of two different objects. Has to use ‘like’ or ‘as’.

Repetition of a word at the start of sentences
Idiom
Culturally specific statement.
‘Bloody oath’
Onamatopoia
Sounds the same as it means. A word that has oral connection
Oxymoron
When two words contradict with each other
Irony
Situational irony-actions have an opposite effect to what was intended
Dramatic irony-where the audience understands but the character doesn’t
Verbal irony-saying one thing but meaning another
Emjambment
A sentence or thought that continues from one line to another
