Define: Alliteration
repetition of the same consonant sound at the beginning of a word
e.g. She Shells Seashells
Define: Antithesis
when two opposite ideas are put together in a sentence to achieve a contrasting effect. helps show contrast
e.g. “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”
Define: Apostrophe
when a speaker breaks off from addressing one party and instead addresses a third party
Define: Caesura
A break or pause in the middle of a line or verse
Define: Oxymoron
A figure of speech that puts together opposite elements
e.g. awfully good
Define: Enjambment
Continuing a line after the line breaks
e.g. after dark, stars glisten like ice, and the distance they span (new line) hide something…
Define: Assonance
Two or more words, close to one another as they repeat the same vowel sound but start with different consonant sounds.
e.g. “ThIs It Is, and nothIng more.”
Define: Onomatopoeia
a word which imitates the natural sounds of a thing.
e.g. bow-wow
Define: Superlative
an adjective or adverb used to distinguish an object from three or more others of it’s type.
e.g. the fairest, tallest, fastest
Define: Consonance
the same consonance sound appears repeatedly in a line or sentence
e.g. she shells seashells
define: rhythm
the long and short patterns through stressed and unstressed syllables. based on the amount of syllables
Define: sibilance
strongly stressed consonants are created deliberately by producing air from vocal tacts through the use of lips and tongue.
