It is a simile that says scrooge is confined, this hard outer shell is capitalism that scrooge has been indoctrinated due to society to believe therefore he prioritizes the wrong things,this hard outer shell dosen’t allow us to see real scrooge
Immersed in the pursuit of making money he has forgotten about other people
Shell is a symbol of capitalism therefore ghosts chip away at this belief of capitalism that scrooge holds.

Smooth snow has no importance in real life no one cares about it people use snow on the ground for snow fights therefore even though they suffer because they are trampled on they have more enjoyment and fun therefore it can be argued they have a better existence they have everything but money
