A word that shows a relationship between a noun or pronoun and some other word in the sentence.
Ex. Jamie ran AROUND the block.
Preposition
A word used to express emotion.
Ex. OUCH! That hurt
Interjection
A word that modifies, or describes, a noun or pronoun.
Ex. Shelly wore a PURPLE scarf.
Adjective
A word that is used in place of a noun or pronoun.
Ex. Raymond brought HIS new game.
Pronoun
A word that modifies, or describes a verb, adjective, or adverb.
Ex. John walked QUICKLY across the room.
Adverb
A word used to join words or groups of words together.
Ex. She has a cat AND a dog.
Conjunction
Names a person, place, thing, or idea.
Ex. He bought a BOOK.
Noun
A word used to express an action, a condition, or state of being.
Ex. Rhonda DROVE to the mall.
Verb
Two or more sentences written as though they were a single sentence.
Ex. Bob ate a pizza it was delicious.
Run-on
Part of a sentence that is written as if it were a complete sentence.
Ex. On a sunny afternoon.
Fragment
Type of run-on in which two sentences are combined only with a comma.
Ex. We went to a movie, it was great.
Comma splice
A group of words w/o a subject and verb.
Ex. down the hill.
Phrase
A groups of words WITH a subject and verb.
Ex. He went to lunch.
Clause
Type of clause that does NOT express a complete thought.
Ex. when I go home.
Dependent clause
Type of clause that expresses a complete thought.
Ex. I went home.
Independent clause
Type of sentence that contains one independent clause and no dependent clause.
Ex. Sally walked along the beach.
Simple
Type of sentence that contains two or more independent clauses and no dependent clauses.
Ex. Sally walked along the beach, and her dog came with her.
Compound
Type of sentence that contains one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses.
Ex. After Sally went to the beach, she went home.
Complex
Type of conjunction that begins a dependent clause.
Ex. WHEN Dani finished her project, she called her friend.
Subordinating conjunction
The word that a pronoun refers to.
Ex. JESSIE left HIS books at home.
Antecedent
A word that ends in —ing and acts as a noun.
Ex. SKATING is fun.
Gerund
A verb form that acts like an adjective.
Ex. He left his HIKING boots by the fire.
Participle
A verb form that begins with the word to and acts as a noun, adjective, or an adverb.
Ex. He likes TO RIDE his bike.
Infinitive
A noun set beside another noun to explain or identify it.
