Stream of consciousness
This is a method of narrating that describes the events as the narrator thinks of them.
Foreshadowing
To give a suggestion of what might happen later in the story
Allusion
A reference to another literary text,
event or person
Juxtaposition
the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect
Homophone
a word which is pronounced like another but has a different meaning and in some cases a different spelling e.g. their / they’re / there
Pronouns
words that replace the noun in the sentence e.g. he / she
Narrative Voice
The way that the narrator speaks or presents the reader with information. Christopher has quite an informal and childish narrative voice
Pathetic fallacy
When nature reflects human emotion (we often see this in the weather)
Interrogative sentence
a question
Hook
a narrative hook is a literary technique in the opening of a story that hooks a reader so that they carry on reading
Exclamatory sentence
A word or sentence used to show surprise or shock and punctuated with an exclamation mark.
Suffix
letters which we add at the end of a word to make a new word
Prefix
Letters which we add at the beginning of a word to make a new word with a different meaning
Superstition
A belief that is not based on reason or scientific thinking and that
explains the causes for events
Ostracise
to exclude from a group or society
Red Herring
a clue that is meant to be misleading or distracting
Tolerance
Willingness to accept behaviour or beliefs that are different to your
own
Rationality
being based on reason or logic
Absurdity
being ridiculous or wildly unreasonable
Bildungsroman
A coming of age story where we witness the protagonist growing up and maturing.
