Engines Flashcards
What is the model of the GE engines we have? And it’s rated thrust?
Pratt Engines?
CF6-80C2-B5F
56,500 lbs of thrust
PW-4056
57,100 lbs of thrust
How do you cancel an engine exceedance red box?
How do you recall it again?
Push the cancel button on the DSP
Push the recall button
What does the amber band mean on the EGT bar?
For how long is the amber band exceedance inhibited on takeoff or go around?
MCT
5 min
If your secondary EICAS display fails and you want to see all your engine instruments on the primary in compact mode how do you do that?
Press ENG on the DSP
What happens if you’re viewing a synoptic on the secondary EICAS and you have an engine exceedance?
The primary EICAS goes to compact automatically indicating what the exceedance is
When is approach idle active?
Flaps to landing position
Or NAC is on
Is there thrust limit protection when in manually selected alternate EECmode?
No, if they are near full forward they will exceed it
ENG 1,2,3,4 EEC MODE
ALTN
EEC is in alternate control mode.
Objective: place all EEC in alternate
> ENG 1,2,3,4 LIM PROT
EEC is in the alternate mode and command N1 is more than the limit
ENG 1,2,3,4 FUEL VLV
One or more of these occur:
The engine fuel valve NIPS
Fuel spar valve NIPS
> ENG 1,2,3,4 RPM LIM
N2 red line limit restricts engine thrust
> IDLE DISAGREE
1 or more engines are not idling at the same rpm (app vs min idle)
> ENG 1,2,3,4 REVERSER
On the ground, a fault occurs in the thrust lever position
ENG 1,2,3,4 START VLV
Start valve is not in the commanded position
> ENG CONTROLS
3-4 EEC systems opérate in degraded mode. Systems don’t have full redundancy.
ENG IGNITION
CONT IGN SYS Has failed
ENG 1,2,3,4 FAIL
An eng fail
Or
Flameout
ENG 1,2,3,4 Control
EEC sys fault occurs
> AUTOSTART OFF
N919CA AND N952CA only
Engine Autostart switch is off
APU FUEL
Low pump pressure is detected when activated
Or
APU fuel valve NIPS
What does a magenta oil quantity mean?
Low oil
What is the certified vibration limit?
If the vibration monitoring system cannot detect if N1 or N2 are the culprits what does the indicating system show?
There is none, however a magenta vibration notes the high vib
BB- broadband (vibration over whole engine)
ENG 1,2,3,4 OIL PRESS
Low oil press
Engine damage or failure possible
ENG 1,2,3,4 OIL TEMP
High oil temp
Possible engine damage may occur
ENG 1,2,3,4 FUEL VLV
One or more of these:
Engine fuel valve NIPS
Spar valve NIPS
If during start, engine won’t start.
In shutdown, engine continues to run until remaining fuel is burned.
What does the light mean in the start switch?
Start valve open
When does the start valve open on start?
When fuel control switch is in run.
What does the red limit line on EGT signify during start?
Max start temp
What 3 things does Autostart not monitor?
N1
Oil temp
Oil press
Abort or shutdown if no N1 or oil press by Idle N2
What does Autostart do if it does not detect EGT rise?
Cuts fuel and ignition, motors for 30 secs.
Then applied ignition to both igniters and fuel .
Three attempts before aborting Autostart
Motors for 30 secs before start and bleed air valves close.
If the Autostart detects an EGT rise but detects a hot or hung start what does it do?
it cuts fuel, adjust fuel schedule and reapplies for another attempt.
In a manual start when to add fuel?
When it reaches the fuel on indicator on n2
When will autostart terminaré start attempts for an inflight start?
When the engine starts or the pilots selects fuel cutoff
If the auto igniter is in single what does it do each flight?
Alternates between 1&2 every other flight
When does auto ignition activate?
Start with less than 50% N2
Flaps out of up
NAC ON
FLAMEOUT (both)
What does selecting stby ignition to 1 or 2 do?
Applies stby power as the power to that igniter continuously
In norm, it is powered by AC pwr. However if the AC power is not powered igniter 1 is powered by stby power continuously.
STARTER CUTOUT 1,2,3,4
Start valve does not close (at 50% N2 after start finished)
Light in start switch doesn’t go out
ENG 1,2,3,4 AUTOSTART
Autostart ON, engine failed to start.
Fault detected in Autostart system
Start parameters exceeded
Manual start EGT parameters rapidly reaching limit
Manual start RUN selected too early.
What does raising the reverse thrust levers to idle do?
Disc auto throttle
Raises auto speed brakes if not armed before landing
(Does the same on a rejected takeoff)
> ENG 1, 2,3,4 REVERSER
Fault detected in the reverser system
ENG 1,2,3,4 FUEL FILT
Fuel contamination can cause fuel to bypass the engine fuel filter
ENG 1,2,3,4 LOW IDLE
ENGINE IDLE not in approach setting when commanded
Advance thrust til extinguished
ENG 1,2,3,4 OIL FILT
Oil Filter contamination can cause oil to bypass the oil filter
> ENG 1,2,3,4 SHUTDOWN
Engine was shutdown by the fuel control switch or the engine fire switch.
What protections do you have with the EEC in Norm?
In ALTN?
Do you have autothrottles in ALTN?
Overboost and Overspeed
Only overspeed
No
On the Pratt engines by what N2 must you have an N1 indication?
After how many minutes must the engine reach idle N2?
40%N2
2 min
What is the cool down time fir the Pratt’s and GE’s after landing?
Pratt’s 5 min
GE 3 min
What’s the difference in warm up between the GE’s and Pratt’s before takeoff?
GE’s must be above bottom of oil temp scale and 3 min run
Pratt’s oil temp above amber band and if engines shutdown more than 2 hours run for 5 min
What’s the difference in cool down for the GE’s vs the Pratt’s after landing?
GE -3 min
Pratt - 5 min
For GE’s what limitations are there for cold soaked engines?
More than 4 hours at -30C or below DONT START ENGINE. Call maintenance to do procedure.
What’s the difference in engine run up between GE and Pratt?
GE- 60% n1 for 30 sec every 30 min
PRATT- 50% N1 for 1 Sec every 15 min
