Engines Flashcards
The engines use a ________ direct gear drive starter unit.
24-Volt DC
Explain the starting sequence.
Fuel selector-on Battery/Alternator-on Mixture/Props- Full forward Fuel pump-Hi Throttle-full forward When fuel flow stable-fuel pump off Throttle-1/2 Starter-engage
What does the manifold pressure gauge indicate?
Intake manifold pressure in inches of mercury (Hg)
What does the engine tachometer indicate?
Engine and propeller RPM
What does the exhaust gas temperature gauge indicate?
The EGT sensed by a probe installed in the exhaust manifold of each engine
Is it fuel injected or carbureted?
Fuel injected
What is the fuel injection pump driven off of?
The accessory drive of the engine
What pressure is fuel introduced into the pump at?
28-31 psi
After the fuel enters a vapor separator, what is the next part that it flows to?
The fuel divider block
What is a fuel air control unit?
Controls the volume of intake manifold air and metered fuel pressure to the engine for proper combustion
What does the fuel pass thru prior to entering the metering valve?
A strainer
What does the metering valve control?
Fuel flow to the manifold and fuel injector distributor block
How many injection nozzles are provided for EACH cylinder?
1
What is the fuel injection nozzles attached to the cylinder?
The head, above the intake port
How do you prime thru the injectors?
The auxiliary fuel pump
What type of oil system is the Baron equipped with?
A wet sump, pressure-type oil system.
What is a wet-sump oil system?
Oil pump draws oil directly from the sump, routes it to the engine, then after use of the oil in the engine, it will redistribute back to the sump
What is the capacity of oil in the engines?
12 quarts
What kind of oil pump is provided?
Gear-driven
What is the oil pump powered by?
Accessory section
What is provided in the oil system to relief high oil pressure in the lines?
Relief valves
What is oil temperature controlled by?
An oil cooler
How does the oil cooler work?
It uses a thermostatic bypass valve to route oil through or around the cooler
What is the type of ignition system?
Dual ignition
Each ignition system consists of ________
Magnetos, wiring harnesses, and a spark plug in each cylinder
What is the type of propeller?
3-blade, full-feathering, constant speed props
What is used to INCREASE blade pitch?
Springs aided by counterweights and/or dome pressure
What DECREASES the blade pitch?
Governor-boosted engine oil
If you lose dome pressure, what capability is lost?
Feathering
What are signs of dome pressure loss?
Sluggish RPM reduction, over speed and poor synchronization during higher RPM operation
What is the underspeed condition?
Ex: Pitching the aircraft up without changing power.
The crankshaft slows, flyweights slow, they fall inward, opening the pilot valve to allow for oil to go into the dome, which moves the blades to a lower pitch to allow it to catch back up with the desired RPM
What is the overspeed condition?
Ex: Pitch down without reducing power.
Crankshaft speeds up, flyweights fall outward, lifting the pilot valve upward to make oil flow from the propeller dome, which in terms will increase the blade angles to higher pitch - making the RPM slow down to desired setting
