Q

What is the correct procedure for a manual handling test?

A
  • Lift in stages. First take the load up to the knees, then lift up to the carrying position. The middle of the load should be level with your waist
  • Hold the object close to your body
  • Make sure the load dose not obstruct your view
  • Remember not to twist the body as this may cause injury

16
Q

What are four examples of confined spaces

A
Fuel Tank
•Fresh Water Tank
•S/M Ballast Tanks
•Machinery Sumps
•Gear Cases
•Heat Exchangers
•Watertight Compartments
•Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs)- Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) risk
17
Q

What is worn to detect gases and which gases is it detecting?

A

When personnel are occupying one of these confined spaces a Leader- Multi Gas Monitor (tests for hydrogen sulphide, methane and oxygen)

18
Q

What PPE should be worn when entering machinery space?

A

Overalls fully done up with sleeves down.

Steel toe capped boots.

Gloves

Goggles

Eat defenders

19
Q

What are the precautions before entering a confined space?

A

The space/ compartment is to be cool.
•The space is to be force ventilated for 24 hours minimum.
•After 24 hours the atmosphere is to be tested safe before the space can be accessed.
•If, after 24 hours the atmosphere is not safe, it is to be ventilated for a further 12 hours and then re-tested.
•This procedure is to be followed until the atmosphere is tested to be safe.
•A Gas Free Certificate must be issues before any entry is allowed into the space.

Before a confined space is accessed there are certain precautions to be observed.
•These include:
•The space/ compartment is to be cool.
•The space is to be forced ventilated for 24 hours minimum.
•After 24 hours the atmosphere is to be tested safe before the space can be accessed.
•If, after 24 hours the atmosphere is not safe, it is to be ventilated for a further 12 hours and then re-tested.
•This procedure is to be followed until the atmosphere is tested safe.
•A Gas Free Certificate must be issued before any entry is allowed into the space.

20
Q

State four restricted access compartments

A
Flammable stores
•Paint Shop
•Fruit and Vegetables Stores
•Refrigerant Plant Rooms
•Battery Shop
•Magazines
•Hydraulic Plant Rooms
21
Q

What tasks are deemed hot work?

A

Welding/burning operation include all welding, gas burning, brazing, use of blow- lamps & liquefied petroleum gas burners, grinding and any other operation which involves the use of application of heat for repair, maintenance or modification.

22
Q

What should a hot work sentry be equipped with?

A

Welding goggles (of the correct specification)
•SPE
•Fire Retardant Blanket
•Surcoat

23
Q

What is the role of the hot work sentry?

A
The welding sentry is to:
•Remove combustible materials
•Cover electrical insulation
•Remove any packing materials
•Clear up any oil in bilges
24
Q

Whose signatures are required for a hot work permit?

A

The sentry
Operator
OOD/OOW
Duty marine engineering senior rate

25
Q

What PPE is required when working with lagging?

A
Green Nylon Overalls
•Skull- cap
•Respirator
•Boots (underneath overalls, not tucked into the boot)
•Gloves
•Goggles
26
Q

What must be obtained before entry to a compartment that has had lagging work performed In it?

A
  • An Assessment is carried out on the task in hand.
  • Ventilation is to be adjusted so that the dust level is kept within the compartment.
  • Warning notices are to be placed at entry points.
  • Warning pipes are to be made to warn the ship’s company.
  • Personnel are to be in the correct clothing.
  • Before any de-lagging damp down with water to minimise dust whilst cutting.
  • All access doors and hatches are to be shut.
  • If practical, polythene sheeting should be used to screen off the working area.
  • Debris should be collected up at regular intervals.
  • No eating or drinking whilst working with lagging materials.
  • Personnel are to shower immediately on completion of work, before eating and smoking.
27
Q

What is defined as aloft?

A

Aloft is defined as:
•All masts
•Funnels
•Ship superstructure to which aerials are secured
•Ship superstructure and aerials which can be excited by neighbouring aerials
•Submarine conning towers
