Q

During the initial hoseline advance the back up FF must maintain the hoseline a certain way. how so?

16
Q

The door position is one of importance. He shall be readily available for relief and serve as a guide w/ a light for members exiting the ffire area. What else is an important task of the doorman?

A

He is to monitor & observe heat smoke & fire conditions at the entrance doorway. If the doorman detects any of these he is in a prime location to warn the nozzle team.
5.5.7

17
Q

At what point is the control mans hose estimate considered complete?

A

required # of lengths from hose bed are removed, the line is broken, connected to a pump discharge outlet. Or required # of lenghts removed & control FF signals ECC to proceed to hydrant.
5.6.8

18
Q

An additional duty assigned to the control man is to chase kinks in the line. If this task is no completed it can result in an ineffective & unsafe fire stream. A single 90 degree kink can result in a 1 3/4” hoseline a loss of what?

A

20 GPM or more
Hoseline w/ 3 kinks could lose 90 GPM or more

Q
E 309 E321 E254 L-159 L-153 BC 33
Residential MD
3204 Ave. W
CIDS: 6 story FPMD ONE STAIRWAY
Who shall the roof man communicate w/ when going above the fire?
A

E-321

5.7.2 For reasons of safety second arriving engine keeps track of members going to floors above.

20
Q

“E309 to Brooklyn URGENT”
GO AHEAD E 309
309 to Brooklyn urgent 10-70
Who shall be designated when a 10-70 has been transmitted?

A

10-70 water relay

The dispatcher will designate the 2nd arriving engine as the “water resource unit”

21
Q

There are several different types of hydrants presently in service in NYC. Please list them

A

smith low pressure (black barrel/silver bonnet)
Dresser low pressure ((black barrel/silver bonnet)
chapman & eddy(jamaica water supply)
High pressure hydrants. 6.2

22
Q

Of the different hydrants which is the best and worst for use?

A

The dresser will provide 10-15% greater discharge than the smith.
High pressure should be avoided. 6.2

23
Q

The dept. employs the use of hydrant discs to provide rapid identification of hydrants that are unserviceable. These discs are different colors & mean different problems please describe each disc.

A

White- unserviceable hydrant or auxiliary fire protection system.
Yellow- frozen hydrants
Blue- placed on 3” siamese of aux. protection system to indicate a system is not functioning as a fully automatic system &/or a portion of the system is such that it will operate effectively when supplied. 6.5.2

24
Q

There are other types of hydrants in addition to previously described. There are yellow pkwy hydrants, red air cock hydrants, & red satellite water system hydrants. Which of these shall engines avoid using?

A

Red satellite hydrants should be avoided.
Red air cock are excellent sources of water for FD use.
yellow pkwy are usually shut down at a curb valve year round. They require 18 clockwise turns to open. 6.7

25
Q

What size hose does the FDNY employ & what are the coupling sizes associated w/ them?

A

1 3/4” hose - 1 1/2” couplings
2 1/2” hose -2 1/2” couplings
3 1/2” hose - 3” couplings
all 50’ lengths & max pressure of 250 PSI.

26
Q

The job also uses high pressure hoses that are carried by high pressure engines. What is the max pressure of this type hose?

A

600 PSI.
the hose is noticeably heavier & its couplings are painted white.
7.2

27
Q

Your the boss in the engine today & you have the new probie working with you. He asks “hey lou how much hose should we have?

A

20 lengths 1 3/4”
30 lengths 2 1/2”
10 lengths 3 1/2”

28
Q

E- 309 is 1st due to a reported fire in a commercial basement. Your the boss and its clear theres an advanced fire upon your 10-84. Do you agree with your decision to stretch a 1 3/4” hoseline at this fire?

A

DISAGREE.
The use of 1 3/4” would be inappropriate if any of the following exist.
the line is used for purely Defensive ops.
Advanced fire on arrival
Large volume of water needed
Large body of fire in uncompartmented area
boss cant determine Size of fire or area
Standpipes. (DALLAS) 7.6.3

29
Q

What size hose and how many lengths max are to be used when supplying the manifold when hose testing?

A

a max of 2 lengths of 2 1/2” hose.

Ch. 7 7.14 c 7

30
Q

How much hose may be tested at one time?

A

38 lengths. 6 lengths per outlet (6 outlets) + the 2 supplying the manifold = 38

31
Q

A water soluble marker is used to mark & draw a line around the hose as close as possible to the male butt at each coupling. A movement of how much would indicate that the male butt & hose are separating?

A

1/8”.
