Engine Exhausts Flashcards
What is the purpose of an exhaust?
Direct the exhaust gasses through the fuselage to the atmosphere in the required direction and at the required velocity
What is the temperature of the gas entering the exhaust system?
between 550-850 deg. C
What are the 3 main sub assemblies of an exhaust system?
Exhaust unit
Jet Pipe
Fixed Area Propelling nozzle
Why is the exhaust cone in the centre of the exhaust unit?
To protect the rear face of the last stage turbine disk from high temperature exhaust gasses
What is the function of exhaust support sturts?
To remove residual whirl velocity prior to entering the jet pipe
Why is there a divergent duct between the exhaust cone face and the exhaust casing?
To reduce the gas flow velocity to approx Mach 0.5 as well as reduce the pressure and friction losses
What is the length of the jet pipe dependent on?
The position of the engine on the fuselage
What is the construction of a jet pipe and why?
Twin wall with an annular space between the walls to allow for cooling and insulation as the gases leaving the propelling nozzle induce a flow of air through the annular space
Why is a jet pipe lagged?
To prevent any heat being transferred to the surrounding aircraft structure
What can the jet pipe be lagged with?
An insulating blanket
What shape does a fixed area propelling nozzle take and why?
Convergent duct to ensure gases leaving the turbine are at high velocity, pressure and temperature
Why is the size of the propelling nozzle important?
Too Small - exit velocity decreases after a certain point due to back pressure build up causing the aircraft to choke, less air will be going through the intake causing compressor to slow down and can cause stall or surge
Too Big - engine rpm will speed up, more air flow being drawn in, almost 0 back flow causing the temperature of the engine to overheat
What does the size of the propelling nozzle affect?
Engine rpm
Mass Airflow
Turbine entry temp
Gas pressure
Thrust
What is a disadvantage of a fixed area propelling nozzle and give a solution
Problem - only efficient at low thrust conditions
Solution - Can use Variable Area propelling nozzles
Why do engine bays require ventilation systems?
To help cool the engine
Prevent heat transfer to aircraft structure
Protect hardware within the engine bay
Purge flammable vapours
