Engine Brakes And Retarders Flashcards
What is an internal engine brake
(Compression released brakes)
Engine brakes that work by causing a sudden release of the compressed air from the cylinder by quickly opening the exhaust valve near TDC of the compression stroke.
What is a charging lobe
A component that admits extra gas exhaust volume into the cylinder before compression
What is a decompression lobe
A component that lifts the exhaust rocker lever near TDC to release engine compression
What is a pyrometer
A temp gauge designed to measure exhaust temperatures. Generates electrical current proportional to its temperature
What engine stroke is used by internal engine brake?
Compression stroke
What engine stroke is used by an external exhaust brake
Exhaust stroke
What percentage of heavy duty vehicles have compression release engine brakes
70%
What is a water manometer
A slack u-tube device used to measure intake reestriction using inches of water column
Your master piston is in contact with what rocker
Your injector rocker
Your slave piston is in contact with what rocker
Exhaust Rocker
Your hyd input retarded is where?
Transmission input shaft, uses trans pump
Your output hyd retarder is where
Output shaft of transmission, not affected by gear
Your remote hyd or electric retarded is mounted where
Between trans and rear end, put in place of carrier bearing. Uses hyd or electric force to slow down. If it’s hyd it’ll have a cooler if it’s electric it’s air cooled
Where are your temperature sensors mounted on a hydraulic remote retarder
Outlet of retarder and outlet of cooler
Where does fluid go after leaving remote hyd retarder?
Straight to a cooler
